Safeguarding Training

Safeguarding training within the Methodist Church is currently comprised of two modules: the Foundation Module and the Advanced Module. Both modules are compulsory dependent upon the individual's role within their church. You can find a list of roles that should attend either training on the Methodist Church website

In order to sign up for an available training session, please visit the Connexional Safeguarding Training Eventbrite page. If you have any queries relating to safeguarding training, please contact Becky Crudington (Regional Safeguarding Team Coordinator).

Foundation Module:

The Foundation Module is designed to serve as both a basic starting course and a refresher course. The course aims to increase safeguarding awareness so that the Church can exercise its duty of care for all. The course can be undertaken in-person or online.

Once completed, participants are required to refresh this training once every 4 years, unless their role requires them to complete the Advanced Module. Please note that Foundation Module Training undertaken with the Church of England is recognised by the Methodist Church as being equivalent to our own Foundation Module.

Foundation Module In-Person:

In-person training for the Foundation Module is primarily organised by the Circuit. Please speak to your Circuit Safeguarding Officer for available training dates.

Foundation Module Online:

Training sessions via Zoom are available for those who are taking the Foundation Module for the first time, or as a refresher.

Foundation Module Online (online-only):

Those in need of a refresher of the Foundation Module are able to complete this training via the MCBX online training platform. This course is not recommended for those completing the Foundation Module for the first time, as some items may trigger difficult memories. Please ensure you inform your Circuit Safeguarding Officer if you are completing this module. You can register for the Foundation Module 2024 (online-only) here: https://mcb.theologyx.com/course/creating-safer-spaces-foundation-module/

Advanced Module:

The Advanced Module is designed to consolidate and develop the learning gained from the Foundation Module. In order to complete the Advanced Module participants must have completed the Foundation Module within the last 4 years. The course can be undertaken both in-person and as an online course, and is facilitated by the Connexional Safeguarding Team.

Advanced Module In-Person:

The in-person edition of this course is comprised of three elements:

1. Unit 1a: Preparing the Ground Booklet

This pre-course booklet contains resources for your self-study before you attend a core-learning session. It underpins the core learning session and is an essential part of the overall learning for this course.

2. Core learning session (Units 1b - 5)

This element is delivered in-person at a training session with an approved Advanced Module trainer. The course usually lasts a minimum of four hours. Please note that participants will be required to register their attendance at this training.

3. Handbook:

This supports your learning during the Advanced Module, as well as further study and resources.

Advanced Module Online:

The online edition of this course is comprised of two elements:

1. Online e-learning to be completed via the MCBX platform

Participants are required to complete online modules via the MCBX platform. Participants must register for access to the course by contacting the Connexional Safeguarding Team. Once access has been given, participants will be able to work through the online modules at their own pace. Whilst there is no time limit set for the completion of the modules, it is expected that they will be completed within 4 weeks.

2. Attendance at the 'Gathered Session'

Once the online modules have been completed, participants will be expected to attend a Gathered Session, led by an approved Advanced Module trainer. Gathered sessions are an online discussion group, where participants will discuss their learning and the case studies provided. Sessions will be held on Zoom.

Please do not sign up for a Gathered session until you have completed the online modules.

Train the Trainer - Foundation Module:

Train the Trainer sessions provide current and would-be Foundation Module trainers with the skills and knowledge necessary for them to deliver the Foundation Module to others. Please note that attendance at a Train the Trainer session is compulsory for all trainers.

These sessions are coordinated by the Connexional Safeguarding Team.
