Eco Church, if you haven’t heard of it, is a brilliant award scheme to help Christians of all denominations to engage, in both practical and spiritual ways, in caring for God’s creation.

It grew out of A Rocha, the global Christian organisation engaging communities across the world in nature conservation, and Dave Bookless, my Travellers’ Tales guest this week, is its director of theology, and he started the UK branch of the organisation 20 years ago.

As Christians we have a good deal of catching up to do in our care of the world we believe was created by God, and with the dangers of the climate emergency only too clear, and already having a devastating impact on some of the poorest people in the world - the neighbours we’re instructed by Jesus to love - the need to act has never been more urgent, but our feeling of helplessness has perhaps never been stronger.

Dave is hugely inspirational, not least because he’s been on quite an eco-journey himself, and talks about the moment, as he threw away the family’s rubbish while on holiday on the beautiful Scilly Isles, when he heard God speak: “How do you think I feel about what you are doing to my world?” Since then he’s been on a mission - to encourage us all to grab hold of the connection between our faith and loving the planet.

I’m sure Dave will inspire you, as he has me, and thousands of others.
