Kings Cross Methodist Church celebrate planning success

It is with great joy that we can report that the proposed redevelopment plans for the Kings Cross Methodist Church site were given planning approval at Camden Council’s planning committee meeting held on Thursday 5th June. The proposal was put to the committee with the support of approval by the Planning Officer and the proposal was voted through unanimously without objection. The strong proposed visualisations colourfully sold the proposal in terms of materiality and design, and the description of the spaces created a clear understanding of the increased social value and good that the church will be able to deliver because of the proposal.

The Architect, Matthew Lloyd Architects, were originally appointed to the project back in 2020, one week prior to the first covid lockdown. However, the church team and the architect persevered through this uncertain time and over the last couple of years have worked closely together to develop a thorough and imaginative proposal. The design is ambitious is scale and appearance, enlarging the existing basement area, reconfiguring the entire internal layout, adding an additional floor and generously updating the internal services and facilities all the while, doing so in a way that respects the materiality and character of the conservation area and local built environment.

As a result of the approved proposal the church will be able to strengthen worship, open a community café, offer improved meeting spaces, increase the number of student accommodation units as well as many other good works. We hope you will all join us in congratulating the church and to pray for their continued success and they proceed to the next staged of the project.
