Young People and Mental Health

A day looking at how we can support those young people in our care who may experience mental health issues; particularly in exam seasons.

We will be exploring the issue of mental health and young people, exploring the prevalence of mental health, how the teenage brain develops, the risk and protective factors present in the lives of young people and how to build resilience in children and young people.

Developing Youth Participation

Participation is about everybody, not just children and young people. It’s part of the Methodist Church’s bigger vision to see the whole Church participating more; making and moulding the shape and substance of the church, together.

Based on the Voice Activated Resources (produced by the Well), this interactive workshop will take attendees through the theories behind youth participation, equipping them with the knowledge and techniques to enable them to empower children and young people in the decision-making process of your church or project.

10am - 3pm

Talking about relationships and sex with children and young people

So many children and young people are crying out for the church to talk about relationships and sex. This day will encourage leaders to think about the why and how of putting this into practice.

We’ll consider healthy relationships, self-esteem, and media influences such as sexting and porn.

This session will be run by a member of Acet UK’s Esteem Network.

7pm - 9pm

Understanding and dealing with challenging behaviour

This practical and interactive one day course will equip youth and children’s workers with the tools needed to respond and deal with challenging behaviour. Aiming to clarify what is meant by challenging behaviour, to know how to look for the cause(s) behind the behaviour, to become more aware of the attitudes and behaviours of adults, to explore different strategies for dealing with behavioural issues.

Detached Youth Work

Detached youth work meets young people, who are often excluded from society, where they are, on their turf. In doing so it creates space to learn what things look like from the edge and discover from that place what positive transformation and good news might look like for the young people we find there.

10am - 3pm

Social Media: The Positives and the Pitfalls

This training day will equip attendees with resources to better engage with young people on the issues surrounding social media, using CEOP’s online resources. As well as exploring ways in which we can use social media to positively engage with young people.

7pm - 9pm

London is a melting pot of different cultures, languages and religions. This equipping day will explore how we can work in a more multi-cultural way and help our children and young people to engage with and build relationships with people from different cultures.

10am - 3pm

Encouraging Holy Habits in Children and Young People

This practical and interactive workshop explores ways of encouraging children and young people to explore Holy Habits and Beautiful Disciplines, discovering creative and practical ways of helping young people and children ‘rediscover’ these ancient ways of discipleship. To engage with the bible and prayer, including through the use of multi-sensory worship, prayer rooms. Based on the books Holy Habits by Andrew Roberts and The Beautiful Disciplines by Martin Saunders.

7pm - 9pm

Understanding the Teenage Brain Webinar

Take a journey inside the brain of a teenager (which won’t be as scary as it sounds). We will be exploring how the parts of the brain all fit together, what they are called and what they do. Then we’ll delve deeper into what actually happens in the head of your average teenager as they go through (and even before it starts) adolescence. All while simultaneously pointing out how all these theories and new discoveries impact on youth ministry. Finishing with a chapter on the implications that all this has on youth ministry.

7pm - 9pm

Core Skills in Running Effective Small Groups (3 part course)

This equipping day will explore how you can make your small groups into ones where the young people are loved, affirmed and get to participate, ones that invite the Holy Spirit to move and reveal the heart of God, ones that see young people encounter Jesus and grow as Christians.
