Safeguarding Training

**UPDATE: Due to the current coronavirus situation all Advanced Level Creating Safer Space Safeguarding training sessions have been cancelled. We hope to be able to reschedule these in the not too distant future and are currently in the process of exploring online platforms as a means of delivering this training.

Safeguarding Training within the Methodist Church is currently comprised of 2 modules:

Both modules are compulsory dependent upon the individual's role within his or her church.

For further information on each module, including their respective Required Attendance Lists (detailing which training is mandatory for which role), details of what you will learn from each module and available training dates, please scroll down or choose the corresponding module link above. In addition you will find information on District wide trainers who are able to facilitate the Foundation Level training.

Foundation Module (2020 Edition)

Foundation Module

The Creating Safer Space Foundation Module (2020 Edition) replaces the previous Foundation Level (2016 Edition) and the Foundation Refresher Module (2016 Edition) and is designed to serve as both a basic starting course and a refresher course.

It was intended for this new course to be rolled out and fully implemented within circuits by Easter this year; however, this date is now under revision due to the suspension of training sessions owing to the coronavirus. Circuits should continue to deliver the Foundation Module (2016 Edition) and the Foundation Refresher Module (2016 Edition) until further notice. The Foundation material will be available to order from Methodist Publishing until Monday 31 August.

Please note that the new module should not be delivered by any trainers who have not completed the revised 'Train the Trainers' course.

Aim of the course:

The course aims to increase safeguarding awareness, so the Church can exercise its duty of care to all. For information on who should attend this course, please view the Required Attendance List.

What will I gain from this course?

After completing the course attendees will:

  • appreciate how safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and fundamental to the culture of a flourishing Church

  • have a better understanding of good safeguarding practice within the Methodist Church, and understand its unique position in creating a safe space for all

  • promote awareness and extend an inclusive welcome to those who have experienced abuse

  • recognise, respond, record and refer relevant concerns about the safety and welfare of a child or adult, and recognise blocks to good practice

  • learn from evidence from the Methodist Past Cases Review (2015-17) and note the current national context, e.g. the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA)

Where can I access the material for this course?

Training materials for attendees can be accessed via the below links. Foundation Level trainers will need to access more detailed information via the trainers section of the website.

Foundation Level courses are not arranged by the District and are coordinated by each circuit. The District recognises that there are some circuits which do not have 'Train the Trainer' qualified people within their midst who can deliver the Foundation course. To address this please find below links to the following:

  • a database of available trainers across the District who will be able to facilitate training in other circuits

  • a list of Foundation courses taking place in various circuits across the District

It is hoped that by sharing resources we can ensure that all persons, churches and circuits are fully equipped to safeguard effectively.

Advanced Module

Advanced Level (2019 Edition)

The Advanced Level (2019 Edition) replaces the previous Advanced Level (2018 Edition) and is comprised of 3 elements:

  • Essential preparation

  • Core Learning session

  • Handbook (a resource for further study)

Aim of the course:

The Creating Safer Space Advanced Level Course is designed to consolidate and develop the learning gained from the Foundation course. For information on who should attend this course please view the Required Attendance List.

What will I gain from this course:

After completing the course attendees will:

  • explore what this means in your designated role of responsibility within the Church

  • further equip you with skills and resources to be confident in promoting good practice in the Church and community

  • extend your understanding of responding well to different groups within the Church community.

Where can I access the material for this course?

Training materials for attendees can be accessed via the below links. Advanced Level trainers will need to access more detailed information via the trainers section of the website.

Advanced Level courses are facilitated by the District and organised on a circuit by circuit basis. This means that registration priority is given to attendees from the host circuit, but we also encourage those in need of the training to apply for sessions outside of their own circuits. There are a number of dates for Advanced Level Training which are open to all.

The Advanced Level course training calendar for 2019 - 2020 has been devised and is available via the link below.
